For those of you who have yet to experience a National, I hope that you will find in this presentation the spark you need to get yourself to one at your earliest opportunity. Evidence of drought was everywhere we went. A year later, in Zone 4, the climate was normal, the gardens were lush, and the difference in daylily behavior in the two zones was evident.
Here are a few general observations I made along the way. First, there are an incredible number of shades of red in daylilies. Second, virtually every daylily lover is a daylily photographer. We all seem to want to capture that precious moment when we see a perfect flower, leading to a steady sound of shutters clicking in the garden. A lot were still only partially open in mid-afternoon. I haven't seen this extreme an effect in my Zone 5 garden.
