Cutty and even some members of the community are optimistic that his program can work for the kids. In the end, Dennis can only do so much for the corner boys, but that does not stop him from investing himself as a mentor to these boys. Countless other structural factors just get in the way of him succeeding with them.
The War on Drugs coupled by housing policies isolating the poor and minorities in disadvantaged communities has put an overwhelmingly disproportionate amount of young, minority males in state and federal prisons for sentences of a decade or more. Stigmatized by peers, employers, and policy makers, men and women who have been recently released from prison are set up for a cyclical reentry to the same cell they just left. Such discrimination in some counties or even states is legally sanctioned and ex-cons there are left with nothing by which to reclaim a foot in society.
It is easy to step back into the cultural milieu the ex-con inhabited before going to prison. The drug trade and the underground economy is always awaiting for them as a means of income. Simply put, our society has left the incarcerated either disenfranchised or ill- equipped for almost every aspect of their day to day life.
